You have survived every near-miss life has offered and we should celebrate! The poignant, funny and heart warming stories that inhabit singer-songwriter Susan Ursprung’s latest release Cradle in the Waves is a vivid reminder of that. Jazz artists Audie Bridges (guitar), Steve Tapper (flute), Zach Bridges (double bass) and Mike Harmon (drums) come together in a show that defies genre limits with jazz-inflected forays into Acadian Celtic, folk, rockabilly, country waltz, and blues.
Susan Ursprung‘s musical background started out in the car singing harmonies with her family, listening to her dad’s band, and impromptu singing over card games around her grandparents’ kitchen table in PEI. At an early age, her ear was in tune to the music of Atlantic Canada – where Acadian tongues sang songs in French and English in wonderful collisions with Celtic rhythm and inflection. She went on to study piano, violin, flute, and guitar. Following a four year stint of singing a capella at Bates College with the Merimanders, Susan and her husband Alex (bassist) formed a bluegrass band Green Apple Quick Step, a children’s music band The Back Porch Band, and for the past 25 years, a rock band, Early Girl & the Big Boys covering classic rock with forays into more recent favorites.
Over most of her life, she wrote poetry to a wide variety of melodies and rhythms that she thought she’d heard before. When it became clear that no one had in fact heard them, she realized they were her own. Through the encouragement of her family and friends, the recording of these songs began. She enlisted drummer and recording engineer Michael Harmon, guitarist Audie Bridges, double bassist Zach Bridges and flautist Steve Tapper to contribute their superb skill, unflagging energy and dedication to the recording of her music. Their enthusiastic embrace has made the project a collaborative effort, taking her songs to the next level. “Cradle in the Waves” is Susan’s second album, and on two songs, the group is joined by drummer Mike Connors who lent a hand with his legendary hand- drumming skills. “Cradle in the Waves” explores taking risks and moving forward on the journey from the known to the unknown. It is dedicated to you the listener with every good wish for a safe voyage.
