About the Exhibit
NIKOLAY CHERNY (Chernyayev)

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia. Started to draw as a child, and was first influenced by and later studied with the renowned Russian artist Victoria Belakovskaya. Received his BA and MA degrees from
St. Petersburg Fine Arts and Industrial Design Academy. Continued his education at the National Research Institute of Industrial Design in Moscow ( a graduate course PhD program).
Worked in industrial design, taught theory and methodology of industrial design and decorative art at the Institute of Advanced Study of the Shipbuilding Industry. Has authored and co-authored over 30 publications in the connection with his professional work.

Since 1992 lives in the USA.
Creates book design, illustrations, and calligraphy works. Has co-authored many art installations, performance events, and decorative art compositions for: Brandeis University, 2003-2008; JCC of Greater Boston, 1999-2001; First Night 2000, Boston; and others.

Regularly participates in various shows. Selected Exhibits: Solo Exhibitions at Tower Gallery at FIT, Framingham, MA, 2005, and cafe ''Europa'', Brookline, MA, 2002. ''Duet'', The Center for Arts in Natick, MA, 2003. Massachusetts State House, Boston, 2000. Hillel Center Gallery, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1997. International Cultural Exchange Show, City Hall, Boston, 1996. Contemporary Russian Art, Brandeis University, 1994.
Has won numerous awards and prizes. Works are in private and corporate collections in the USA, Russia, Estonia, Germany.

Has designed sets and costumes for the plays: ''The Marriage'', Fireplace Theatre, Boston; ''The Forest'' – International Fringe festival, The Connely Theatre, New York, 1998.

For many years teaches special, created by him, art course,''Formulas for Drawing''. Based on this course, has created the program for subject ''Arts'' for the Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School, Marlborough, Massachusetts, 2004-05.

''Phenomena of reality are getting accessible for us, if we can give them a name. To impart form to primary unformed matter is our way of communicating with the world, through an endless process.
I try to realize this connection using color, line, shape, etc.''
