On view at Amazing Things Art Gallery: paintings, drawings, photography, and installation sculpture created by artists whose work engages with surrealism. In these visionary realities, everyday subjects become strangely transfigured. Surrealism employs exaggeration, juxtapositions, paradox, and the uncanny, often attained by careful attention to the details of an improbable reality. Alternately, artists invoke surrealism by the dissolution or radical distortion of reality into abstraction or derangement.
The landscape, the figure, or the portrait becomes a stage for a play of dream imagery, the unconscious, poetic visual association, and color shifts. Free association, automatic processes, and an intensity of visual imagination allow the disturbing to intrude on everyday experience. This provokes a rupture of unconscious impulse through social strictures, and art that admits symbolism and ambiguity with beautiful expression and skill.
